What happens after the scan?

If you received Lopressor(beta blocker) through your IV during the scan, you will be transferred to the recovery area. A nurse will monitor you heart rate, oxygen level and blood pressure for 30 minutes. You will then be given discharge instructions and can go home.

If you do not receive a beta blocker, only Nitroglycerin, you can go home as soon as the scan is completed.

Because the medications used during this test can cause a mild headache or some dizziness, as a safety precaution, you will not be allowed to drive immediately after the test. Someone may accompany you to drive you back home/work, you may take public transportation, or you may walk.

In both cases you may resume your normal activities and diet after the test. Because you received contrast it is suggested that you drink an additional 1 or 2 glasses of water throughout the day after your scan. The contrast agent will not discolor your urine. Although it is rare to experience any delayed allergic reactions, contact the CT Department or your doctor if any rash or swelling occurs.

If you have any questions or concerns about this test, please ask your doctor, nurse, or contact us.
