Fellowship and research opportunities
We currently offer several different fellowship and research opportunities. Based at the downtown Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a 600-bed tertiary referral center for the greater Chicago area, our fellowship program offers exposure to all aspects of cardiovascular imaging, including Cardiac MR, MR angiography (MRA), Cardiac CT, CT angiography and includes elective clinical rotations in echocardiography and nuclear medicine.
The Department currently has seven magnets, including the new Siemens MAGNETOM Avanto. This scanner is central to the clinical cardiovascular MR imaging program, as it allows high resolution cardiac and peripheral vascular imaging using state of the art technology, as well as opening doors to new areas of research. In addition to the Avanto, the Department has one Siemens Symphony, one Siemens Sonata, and one Siemens Quantum. There is also a Siemens 3.0T Trio scanner, which is housed in the adjoining dedicated research facility, along with a 1.5T Siemens Sonata. In spring 2007, we have replaced the Sonata scanner with the new Siemens Espree scanner. The department currently uses several new CT scanners, including three Siemens Sensation 16-slice scanners and a state-of-the-art 64-slice scanner.
Cardiovascular imaging fellowship
Based at the downtown Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a 600-bed tertiary referral center for the greater Chicago area, the cardiovascular imaging fellowship program offers training in all aspects of cardiovascular imaging, including Cardiac MRI, MR angiography (MRA), Cardiac CT and CT angiography. The goal of the fellowship is to provide training and education in all technical and clinical aspects of cardiovascular MRI and CT. Fellows will also receive instruction in research methodology through mentored support of projects in cardiovascular MRI and CT and will receive dedicated academic time for that purpose.

The clinical / research MRI fellowship is a dedicated one-year program incorporating all aspects of clinical, research and practical magnetic resonance imaging. The fellowship places a strong emphasis on research activity and is intended for individuals planning to pursue an academic career focusing on MRI. The clinical component includes training in the core clinical areas of cardiovascular, neuroradiology, body imaging and musculoskeletal. In addition, fellows will also have the opportunity to do elective rotations with options including breast MRI, interventional MRI and pediatric imaging. The practical portion of the fellowship provides an opportunity to learn basic and complex MRI techniques through supervised hands-on instruction in MRI scanning.

The Departments of Radiology and Cardiology at Northwestern University in Chicago are currently offering one week to three month visiting fellowships in cardiovascular MRI. There are currently 15-20 cardiac MRI studies and 15-20 vascular MR studies performed weekly at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Visiting fellows will be able to observe and discuss clinical cardiovascular MRI cases, as they occur.

The Department of Radiology is also offering 1-year research associate positions in cardiovascular imaging. There are dedicated research facilities where the research associate will be situated. The research group consists of physicians from radiology, cardiology, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery, PhD faculty, post-doctoral students from biomedical engineering and PhD faculty from Siemens Medical Systems.
